Developing and Implementing a Seismic Risk Management Plan for Underground Mines
Developing and Implementing a Seismic Risk Management Plan for Underground Mines
Level: Intermediate
Facilitators:
Yousef Abolfazlzadeh, Ph.D., P.Eng
Amir Rostami, MSc., P.Eng
Abstract:
This workshop provides a structured and practical overview of how to develop and implement a Seismic Risk Management Plan (SRMP) for underground mines in compliance with R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 854: Mines and Mining Plants under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (O. Reg. 69/23, s.13). Maintaining an up-to-date SRMP is essential for managing seismic hazards, protecting personnel, and ensuring ongoing operational safety in deep and high-stress mining environments.
Participants will learn how to design, assess, and continuously improve SRMP through the integration of seismic monitoring, numerical modeling, risk evaluation, and control measures. The course draws on the SRMP framework currently used by leading mining operations and includes insights from consultants, mine operators, and academic collaborators.
The content is designed to be practical, educational, and non-commercial, combining regulatory context, technical principles, and real-world examples from underground mining case studies.
Short Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the requirements and purpose of maintaining an SRMP.
Identify key components of a seismic risk management framework, including data collection, hazard analysis, and control implementation.
Interpret seismic and geotechnical data to support risk assessment and re-entry analysis.
Recognize best practices for integrating monitoring, modeling, and operational decision-making.
Foster collaboration between consultants, operators, and researchers to enhance mine safety and compliance.
Target Audience:
Underground mine operators and engineers, geotechnical and seismic specialists, mine planners, health and safety professionals, and graduate students or researchers in mining engineering and rock mechanics.
