Preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities in the Mining Industry... beyond Critical Controls

HALF DAY13:00 to 17:00

Level: Advanced

Facilitators: Michael Hajaistron & Don Martin, dss+

At the 2022 CIM Conference in Vancouver, a highly rated and landmark Short Course was conducted on SIF Critical Controls. At the conclusion of the workshop, there was general agreement that many Mining organizations have made significant progress in implementing SIF Critical Controls. In general, these SIF Critical Controls are well-designed and well-written, and when gaps are detected, they are corrected. Despite significant progress in implementing Critical Controls, serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) still occur in the Mining Industry.

By design, SIF Critical Controls are protective only when they are fully-implemented and available to perform when needed. However, dss + field assessments routinely detect breakdowns in the availability and performance of these Critical Controls at unacceptably high levels, leading to uncontrolled SIF exposure. So, why does this vulnerability persist in so many work environments?

In seminal research conducted by dss+, and facilitated with major Mining companies around the world, we have validated the SIF Precursor model, and its application to the Mining Industry.

This three-to-four-hour Session is designed as follow up to the 2022 CIM Critical Controls Short Course and will build upon the significant findings and advances from that Session.

In the first part of this follow-on Session, we will first overview SIF Precursors in the Mining Industry. Digging deeper into the third element of the SIF Precursor definition (breakdown in application of Critical Controls), dss+ and the guest Facilitators will share perspectives and data describing “why” these breakdowns persist in the work environment. We will also cover the leadership and culture elements that lead to breakdowns in Critical Control applications that result in SIFs in the Mining Industry.

In the second portion session, a facilitated panel discussion will overview the actions mining companies are taking to address these challenges in the field.

In the third segment of the Session/Workshop, we will discuss how organizations can strengthen heir leadership and cultural attributes to improve this situation and discuss actions Leaders can take to positively impact SIF exposure in their organizations. Content will feature the 10 Verified Facts for SIF elimination, best practices developed by dss+ that have been proven to have positive impact n long-term applications in organizations both within and outside the mining industry. Finally, an engaging large group discussion and exercise is expected to be a main feature of this final segment with a focus on what organizations can do immediately to address this challenge at their sites. In addition to saving lives, these actions can have a positive impact on the Operational and ESG performance of their organization.
