Discuss an Approach to Develop an Effective Mine Water Management and Treatment Strategy

Half Day13:00 to 17:00

Discuss an Approach to Develop an Effective Mine Water Management and Treatment Strategy

Level: Introductory

Facilitator: Vikram Khera, Hatch

As new mines are required to meet more stringent water regulations, this course will outline activities and steps required to develop a robust water management/treatment strategy. This course will also include an introduction to advanced mine water treatment technologies. Site specific examples will also be shared.

This course will discuss the following:

  1. Approach to Water Treatment

  2. Show importance of an effective/efficient water management strategy – what worked in the past is not valid going forward

  3. Discuss risk-based design approach to water management/treatment, as water treatment plants cannot be designed for one set of conditions

  4. Process Design Development

  5. Data requirements – hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry,

  6. Water Balance and Water Quality Requirements

  7. Examples of new discharge requirements

  8. Consider site-specific water opportunities – share site recent examples

  9. Testwork

  10. Importance of testwork

  11. Options for testwork

  12. What to do if water is not available for testing

  13. Execution Approaches

  14. Discuss different execution approaches: Vendors vs. Consultants vs. EPC, advantages and disadvantages for each approach

  15. Disadvantages/advantages of mobile vs. non-mobile treatment plants

  16. Examples Current and Advanced Water Treatment Technologies

  17. Overview of common water treatment processes

  18. Basics of advanced water treatment technologies (pros and cons)

  19. Examples of common flaws/oversights in water treatment designs

  20. Hot topics in treatment (selenium, biological, etc.)

Short Course Objectives:

As new mines are required to meet more stringent water regulations, this course will outline activities and steps required to develop a robust water management/treatment strategy. This course will also include an introduction to advanced mine water treatment technologies.

Target Audience:

Mining professionals with interest in mine water management/treatment.

About the instructor:

Vikram Khera has over 23 years of experience in water management/treatment for the mining industry. He has been responsible for the development of site-wide water treatment and management solutions for major mines. His experience includes high-density sludge (HDS), ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, brine management/treatment, and low metals treatment. Vikram has also been involved in the design of various water treatment plants at different stages and has developed water management and treatment solutions to save substantial capital and operating costs for various projects.
